1- Advise Centre’s general activities and services provide. Service users

Community Advise Centre is continue provide services to members of Vietnamese community Monday to Friday, people who visit the Centre asking advise and guidance or seeking for help i.e., Welfare Benefits, Pension Credit, Housing and Council Tax, Gas, water and Electricity bills, Hospital or Doctor appointment, Children School letters, Passport, Driving License renewal…

The Advise Centre also open for ESOL Classes for people Learning English Level One and Level Two helping people improve their English.

2- Community Support Worker:

  • Liaise with Jobcentre Plus offices and Benefit Services to ensure that people are getting the right of Welfare benefit, Housing and Council Tax benefit to which they are entitle to.
  • Liaise with HM Revenue regarding about Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit for Working families with low Income.
  • Liaise with Child Benefit Office.
  • Liaise with Housing Associations, Birmingham City Housing Dept. For Rent arrears and maintenance services.
  • Liaise with Hospitals, GP for Patients with language difficulty.
  • Translate for School reports, Letters etc.

Daily Visitor record book showed that. The number of people visited Advise Centre was recorded:
October 2010 to March 2011 = 1,685 + 150. Total: 1,835 service users

New Year Festival 07-02-2010 150 people attended at MVRCA’s Advice Centre

Total: Vietnamese People using the MVRCA services: 1,835 Vietnamese people beneficiary from
Midlands Vietnamese Refugee Community Association service provided for 6 months from October 2010 to March 2011.

3- Funding and Financial

And MVRCA’s account statement on 31st of March 2011 show that the MVRCA a/c balance is: £ 12,542.54
Birmingham Volunteer Services Council ( BVSC) responsible for MVRCA’s Staff salary
(Also the Management report account of Fourth quarters from April 2009 to March 2010 has been completed)

4- Adults and Education

There are two sections of ESOL Classes: intermediate Level One Tuesday-Thursday 10am to 12am
Level Two Wednesday – Friday 10am to 12 am at MVRCA’s Advise Centre.

The Learners enjoyed attending the class. Whilst they learned English they socialised at the same time.
The class had a wide range of age difference from early 20s to over 60s, but they respected each other and get on well. The Class referred to is ESOL Entry 1& Entry 2. Speaking, listening, reading and writing exams. Some have moved up to a higher-level and are studying at other language centres.

Saturday Supplementary School at The Vietnamese Catholic Pastoral Centre, 10 Wye Cliff Road. Handsworth Birmingham every Saturday, with a number of 45 Children in 4 classes and on the Saturday 29th January 2011 Birmingham Local Education Authority holds a special annual event to celebration the achievement of Pupils in Supplementary Schools at The Centennial Centre Ickniel Port Road Edgbaston. Three Vietnamese Pupils also have been awarded for high achievement.

5- Traditional New Year Culture Festivals

This year 2011, The Vietnamese Lunar New Year. The year of the Cat and because weather was very cold the MVRCA’s Committee Members cannot organised with a wider services of performances to provide services to Vietnamese community members but we have managed to organised an event The New Year celebration and attracting a number of 150 people participants at MVRCA Community Advice Centre on:
Sunday 30th January 2011.

In order to continue serving the Midlands Vietnamese Refugee Community Association more effectively, we would like to ask for your help and supportive.

Thời gian vừa qua, vì thời tiết muà đông lạnh lẽo nên HCN tạm ngưng sinh hoạt, hôm nay Ban Điều Hành gửi thư này xin thông báo cùng quý Thành Viên HCN là chúng ta sẽ tái sinh hoạt vào: Ngày Thứ Bãy, ngày 04-6-2011. Tại VP Cộng Đồng lúc 10 am. Quý vị sẽ tham gia các tiết mục như: Hát Karaoke, xổ số Loto, đánh Mạc chược, trao đỗi thông tin, thăm hỏi lẫn nhau và sau đó đến 12.pm các Thành Viên HCN, Thân hữu thưỡng thức các món ăn thuần tuý Việt nam như thường lệ.

Sinh hoạt Hội Cao Niên nhằm mục đích tạo điều kiện cho Quý vị Cao tuổi, có điều kiện và cơ hội gặp nhau mỗi tuần một lần, thăm hỏi nhau và trao đổi thông tin kinh nghiệm sống trong xã hội đã và đang xãy ra hàng ngày. Quý vị Cao tuổi ít khi đi ra ngoài thường xuyên nên hay gặp những buồn chán. Vì vậy dù Cộng Đồng chúng ta đang trong hoàn cảnh khó khăn về tài chánh và trong cuộc họp tại CĐ ngày 15-5-2011 vừa qua, tất cã mọi ý kiến đều đồng thanh đề nghị CĐ nên tiếp tục duy trì sinh hoạt Hội Cao Niên, và tìm cách vận động, kêu gọi lòng hảo tâm của các Mạnh Thường Quân, quý Thân Hữu ủng hộ về mặt tài chánh để CĐ có khã năng sinh hoạt trong lúc các nguồn tài trợ đang bị cắt giảm và vì vậy BĐH/CĐ chúng tôi xin gởi kèm theo “ Phiếu ủng hộ tài chánh cho sinh hoạt Hội Cao Niên “ mọi sự ủng hộ chúng tôi xin chân thành cảm ơn Quý Đồng hương và sẽ công bố trên trang Website Cộng Đồng và tại Văn phòng CĐ.

Cộng Đồng Người Việt Tỵ Nạn Vùng Midlands kể từ ngày thành lập từ Tháng 10 Năm 1982 tính đến nay đã gần 29 năm, trãi qua bao nhiêu thăng trầm thế sự, CĐ hôm nay vẫn còn hiện hữu đó cũng nhờ sự ủng hộ đóng góp công, sức, tài, vật của quý Đồng hương và quý BĐH các nhiệm kỳ trước đây vì vậy, chúng tôi xin một lần nữa chân thành tri ơn mọi sự đóng góp của quý Đồng hương.

Thư Mời Tham Dự Tất Niên

Thưa quý vị,

Năm Canh Dần sắp hết, Tết Tân Mão sắp sang, Người Việt Nam chúng ta khắp nơi cũng rộn ràng chuẫn bị mừng Xuân mới.

Thế nhưng, vì có những vấn đề khó khăn mà Cộng Đồng chúng ta đang gặp là: Thứ nhất, tình hình kinh tế suy thoái của Anh Quốc đã làm cho việc xin “ tài trợ “ các sinh hoạt của Cộng Đồng ngày càng khó khăn, Thứ hai, Thời tiết quá lạnh nên việc đi lại cho các sinh hoạt rất bất tiện, cho nên Ban Điều Hành đã có 1 buổi họp và quyết định là: Xuân năm nay Ban Điều Hành Cộng Đồng không tổ chức Đại Hội Mừng Xuân Tân Mão mà chỉ tổ chức Liên Hoan Tất Niên tại Văn Phòng CĐ mà thôi.

Vì thế, Ban Điều Hành Cộng Đồng chúng tôi sẽ tổ chức một buổi tiệc Trà Tất Niên họp mặt thân mật:

THE ASSOCIATION

The Midlands Vietnamese Refugee Community Association is a registered charity (Charity Registration Number 702306) that was founded in 1982 with the mission to:

  • Preserve and develop the Vietnamese cultural heritage;
  • Assist the Vietnamese community to integrate into the UK’s multi-cultural society and to improve their living and working conditions, and
  • Ensure that the Vietnamese community have equal access to available services.

Service Provision

The Association has been providing the following services:

1. Advice and support on education, employment, training, housing and welfare benefits.

2. Organisation of cultural events and recreational activities.

3. Organisation of mother tongue classes for Vietnamese children. English classes.

4. Liaison with statutory and non-statutory organisations.

Main activities in the year

Advice Centre Service

Staffed by one part time worker and the Committee Members and 10 very actively Volunteers, the Association offered advice and information to the Vietnamese community on a wide range of issues such as welfare benefits, housing, nationality, health, education and employment. In the past year, the Association dealt with a total of 1,350 individual cases, Elderly Club and ESOL Classes, bring a total number of service users to 2,677 .

The Association’s Advice Centre opened Monday to Friday, 9AM to 2PM and Saturday 10AM to 2PM to satisfy the demand.

Total: Vietnamese People using the MVRCA services: 2,677 Vietnamese people beneficiary from Midlands Vietnamese Refugee Community Association service provided from October 2009 to September 2010.

ESOL Classes

ESOL Classes were provided by Birmingham Adults Education Department and Trinity House to help people with reading and writing English. There were 3 sessions every week from Monday to Friday.

MVRCA’s Website

The MVRCA Website has been updated, information’s and activities are monthly updating. The Elderly Club, Tai-Chi Club and Seaside Trips, Vietnamese Community Social event’s pictures. Please come and visit your Home page: https://mvrca.wordpress.com

Supplementary Class

Nearly 40 children attended the Vietnamese Supplementary Class every Saturday to learn about their mother tongue and about aspects of Vietnamese history and culture. There were 4 classes at 4 different levels.

Cultural Activities

The Association celebrated the Year of the Tiger at Holte Community Leisure Centre in 07th February. The celebrations were well attended and attracted an audience of 400 people. And on the 3rd of October 2010, MVRCA has organised The Moon Festival and about 350 Vietnemese People attended. The young people took part in a range of performances including a Dragon Dance, folk dance and traditional live music. The event was successful in terms of the attendance, the quality of the performances, the joyful atmosphere, the participation of the community and the sense of achievement, as it was all organised by a band of dedicated volunteers, and the Music entertainment, and refreshment was provided.

Elderly Luncheon Club

Thanks to the financial support from Birmingham City Council, Third Sector Partnership. The Association was able to continue its Elderly Luncheon Club. Up to 20 to 25 elders attended the Luncheon Club each week. They enjoyed having a social time together, taking TAI-CHI lessons to keep fit and healthy , which were given by Master Chi My Tran every Saturday from 11AM to 12 AM, singing karaoke, social gathering and sharing meals in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Association also subscribes to a Vietnamese monthly magazine, DVD Music to enable the elders to read about current events and feature stories in their own language.
